How Occupancy Detection Works

The core CV task in smart parking is space-state classification: for each monitored space, is it vacant or occupied? This sounds simple, but the real-world conditions make it genuinely hard.

A parking space seen from a fixed overhead or angled camera changes appearance constantly. Different vehicles have different shapes and colors. Shadows shift through the day. Lighting goes from harsh midday sun to the amber glow of sodium vapor at night. Rain creates reflections. Leaves and debris accumulate. Modern deployments address this through a combination of techniques:

Zone-based detection. Each parking space is mapped to a polygon region of interest (ROI) in the camera frame. The model only evaluates that region, ignoring everything outside it. This reduces false positives from vehicles in adjacent spaces or lanes.

Temporal consistency. A single-frame classification is unreliable. Production systems require a space to be classified as occupied (or vacant) in at least 3 of 5 consecutive frames — typically sampled at 1–2 frames per second — before changing its state. Multi-model ensembling. High-accuracy deployments run both a lightweight object detector (looking for vehicle bounding boxes) and a background subtraction model (looking for changes from a learned baseline). Agreement between both increases confidence. Disagreement triggers a third inference pass.

LPR (License Plate Recognition) is the technology that transforms occupancy detection into a complete parking management system. Where occupancy detection tells you a space is occupied, LPR tells you by whom — and that identity unlocks enforcement, subscription billing, and permit management.
